What AEO means here
Answer engine optimization asks whether a page can be retrieved and whether it states a clear answer. We measure fetch access, crawler policy, indexing, and whether the main purpose is visible in the HTML.
What GEO means here
Generative engine optimization is about being usable as a source for generated answers. We check snippet rules, canonical consistency, structured data that matches visible claims, and readable copy that does not exist only after JavaScript.
Checks included on every free audit
Results are pass, fail, warning, not applicable, or unknown. Unknown never counts as a pass. Training bots and llms.txt stay informational.
Page retrieval
Status, redirects, final URL, content type, and login or challenge responses.
Search-crawler policy
robots.txt for this path against Googlebot, OAI-SearchBot, and PerplexityBot.
Indexing directives
Meta robots and X-Robots-Tag, including contradictions.
Snippet restrictions
nosnippet, max-snippet, and data-nosnippet on visible copy.
Canonical consistency
Declared canonical versus the final fetched URL.
Readable main content
Whether the title, H1, and answer exist in the initial HTML.
Google eligibility
Owner Search Console data when connected; otherwise not verified.
Page purpose
Heuristic: does the page state its product, service, or question?
Structured data
JSON-LD syntax and whether prices match visible content.
Offer completeness
On commercial pages: scope, price or quote path, limits, and a next step.
Honest limits
Readiness checks do not guarantee inclusion in ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, or Google AI Overviews. This is a single-page technical and content audit, not a citation rank or GEO score.
Questions
- What is AEO and GEO?
- AEO means answer engine optimization. GEO means generative engine optimization. Both overlap with SEO: can crawlers fetch the page, is it indexable, and is the main answer in the HTML? Google treats generative-search optimization as part of SEO.
- Does this tell me if ChatGPT will cite my site?
- No. The free check measures access and clarity on one URL. It does not query ChatGPT, Gemini, or Perplexity, and it does not produce a citation probability.
- Is missing llms.txt a fail?
- No. llms.txt and GPTBot training opt-outs are informational. They never lower the readiness totals.
- Is this a whole-site crawl?
- No. Findings apply to the URL you submit. Site-wide linking is not assessed.
